Healthy relationships allow room for healthy push back.

We’ve each found ourselves in situations where it has become necessary to push back on something with a boss, colleague, client or friend. For most of us, it’s difficult to be on either the giving or receiving end, regardless of the hot issue of the moment. We also don’t relish the thought of having a tough conversation with someone we respect.

Every now and then, however, there’s simply no choice and push back becomes necessary to keep relationships healthy. Here are a few things to keep in mind when it does:

1. Timing is everything. If you don’t sense the timing is right, then back out.

2. If emotions aren’t in check, suggest another time for the discussion.

3. Realize that you don’t have to resolve everything in one conversation.

4. Suggest that certain topics be tabled until both parties have clearer heads.

5. When possible, write down goals and expectations before the conversation.

6. Keep things light, friendly and win/win.

7. If they don’t see it your way, try seeing it theirs.
