The box office has been abuzz recently with the premiere of The Blind Side, the true story of Michael Oher’s early years and relationship with Sean and Leigh Anne Tuohy. Based on Michael Lewis’ book, The Blind Side: Evolution of a Game, we get a view of Oher’s impoverished upbringings, his years at Wingate Christian School, and his position as one of the most highly coveted prospects in college football.
This family-friendly film is much more than a feel-good sports movie. It takes us inside Big Mike’s life as we watch the relationship form between him and the Tuohy family—beginning with their single act of kindness one cold rainy night.
Although the movie is not advertised as a Christian film, an interview with the real Leigh Anne Tuoy reveals it’s greater and deeper themes.
They saw a need and acted on it.
The story of this movie is capturing movie-goers across the country. Yes, it is family-friendly so you can watch it without fear of profanity, etc., and it has a happy ending as evidenced by Michael’s life today. But, for me, I am challenged as I continue to reflect on the deeper messages of the movie.
How often do I see a need and act on it?
As we enter the holiday season, there are so many opportunities to serve, help someone, or simply sacrifice part of our comfortable routine. Are we looking for those opportunities?
In our personal ministries, in this holiday season, what difference can our talents, resources and time make in the life of someone? That single act of kindness could be the difference in someone’s life.
After all, isn’t that what the Christmas season should be all about?
