How to Use Focus Groups in Ministry Communication Planning
By chris | August 27, 2007
Everybody does research in ministry communication. They may not know it, but when they think up innovative ideas and launch new ministries, they find out if they work or fail pretty quickly. It is too bad when ministry leaders find out their innovative idea is an expensive experiment in what will not work in their community. That’s a backward research approach! I think the stakes are so high in ministry communication that leaders need to learn how to do research on the front end of outreach planning. Research is not as hard as you might be thinking.
One of my favorite tools for learning about people is the focus group. A focus group is a group of 6-10 people who meet together for an hour (or two, no more than that please) to discuss a focused topic. There is an objective moderator who guides the conversation along the topic, without taking the lead or lecturing on the subject.
