Resourcing Social Marketing Strategy with Nedra Weinreich

We continue with part two of our interview with Nedra Weinreich. Nedra is a consultant, author and speaker working in the field of social marketing. Social marketing is applying marketing principles to promoting health and social issues and bringing about positive behavior change. She is the author of Hands On Social Marketing, a must read for anyone wanting to apply social marketing principles in the nonprofit context.

I have heard of the concept of making social marketing products “Fun, Easy, and Popular,” can you explain what is meant by that?

This is a great rule of thumb that came from Bill Smith of the Academy for Educational Development. Make the product seem fun by showing all the great benefits that people will get when they use the product. Make it as easy as possible to adopt the product by removing barriers — physical or mental — that prevent people from taking action. And make it seem popular by showing that other people just like them have been using the product and are very happy with it.
