Isn't that Special?

by Chris Forbes

Free tips for getting the word out about your church from the Ministry Marketing Coach

Has your church been in the slumps? You know, when routine gets to you and you find yourself doing the same old things over and over, and the pizzazz and excitement the church once had isn’t there.

Renew that excitement by planning a special event. Doing something new, a special emphasis of some kind can bring back the excitement. An event, an unusual program or perhaps a sermon series can be a draw to invite new people. Many possibilities exist. Why not go through the 40 Days of Purpose with your church? The popularity of the book could be a ministry tool in itself. Other ideas include inviting a special speaker or hosting a citywide event or a funny contest. What you chose depends on the personality of your church and leadership.

A special event gives members an excuse or reason to invite friends. It also encourages church members to start reaching out and talking about their church again. And, a special event need not be related to a holiday, either. Special events have packed churches at all times of the year. Coinciding special events with the kickoff of a sports season, community activity or even the county fair can get your church or ministry noticed and draw others in.

Limit special events to make them really special. Make them times when you break off and do something truly different. The emphasis will generate new energy in your church. And, when you do, people will tell their friends about it and invite them to the event. Be strategic with special events. Don’t plan an event every week and call it “special.” Members will stop believing in the “specialness,” and won’t get excited or invite their friends when it’s really just business as usual. Be strategic with your special events.

Action Point!

Look at your calendar and determine a good time when you can do something out of the box. Think of something different, something truly special that will excite your members in a meaningful way and draw interest to your ministry.
